Golf Trail Tip of the Month: Rolling Hills Country Club

Steve Nolawski, general manager and head golf pro at Rolling Hills Country Club in Versailles, offers this advice on perfecting your golf game:
“Does practice make perfect? I would say it does not, because too many players are practicing the wrong things.
Players will try to fix problems themselves by making adjustments they read in a golf magazine or see on TV. They may even try their own remedies to fix the problem. Many times these problems could have been fixed very easily, in a single lesson with a professional.
I suggest golfers take one lesson in the spring, with the purpose of building a plan for the season. This plan should re-enforce the positive and address one problem. It should include a couple of drills to practice and re-enforce proper technique and improve the quality of practice through the season.
Many times this will eliminate a great deal of frustration and the need for several lessons to fix what problems they may have created on their own. Compare this to people who fix their own leaking sink. Many times they will create more work for the plumber when he has to come and fix it correctly. Unfortunately, the do-it-yourself repair often leads to the need for more professional help. PGA professionals will be able to work with your skills and physical abilities to build a swing that works for you.
The key is to be proactive and give yourself solid fundamentals with practice drills that re-enforce and improve your swing. Don’t wait until things go wrong and then try to fix it by finding a band-aid at the range or in a golf magazine. A little effort and education in the beginning will allow you to spend more quality time on the course and less time smacking practice balls on the driving range.”

May Golf Trail Tip of the Month: The Ridge at The Lodge of Four Seasons

Matt Tausig, director of golf at The Lodge of Four Seasons in Lake Ozark, offers this advice for playing the #1 hole on The Ridge course:
“The first hole at The Ridge golf course at The Lodge of Four Seasons is one of my favorite starting holes. The elevated tee offers a picturesque view along with a little jolt of confidence knowing that I don’t need to catch my tee shot perfectly.
Before you pull out the driver on this 340-yard slight dog-leg right par four, let’s evaluate the hole and the put together a plan that will give you the best opportunity to start your round with a par.
First, you will notice the 50-foot drop in elevation from the tee to the fairway which may allow you to take less than a driver off the tee. The hole is lined by trees on both sides with the green tucked behind the trees on the right. The fairway slopes hard from left to right with a fairway bunker strategically placed on the right side of the fairway 240 yards off the tee. The bunker should be avoided at all costs. Tee shots hit into this bunker create a very difficult second shot to the green and will result in more bogeys than pars.
In order to give yourself the best chance at walking off the first green with a par, grab your 225-yard club to take the fairway bunker on the right out of play. Remember, the left side of the fairway slopes hard to the right, so pick a target in-line with the far-left edge of the fairway. The contour of the property will bring your tee shot to the center of the fairway.
From the fairway, you will notice the green is slightly elevated and rather small. The angle you have to the pin and pin position should dictate how aggressive you want to be. For the sake of this piece, the pin is located in the front and to the right on the green. Although, you are only left with 115 yards, I recommend playing to the center of the green to eliminate a short miss that will find its way into the grass bunker on the short side.
Approach shots that hit the green will often give you a good look at birdie. The green gradually slopes from back to front-right but allows for birdie putts to be played aggressively.  Regardless of what golf course or hole you are playing, always evaluate the hole, be sure to create a plan that gives you the best opportunity to make par.”

Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitude

Relax in style at the new Margaritaville Lake Resort at the Lake of the Ozarks.

The rumors you’ve heard are true… there’s now a Margaritaville at the Lake of the Ozarks. You can go ahead and start singing that legendary Jimmy Buffett song now.

Officially celebrating its launch on Wednesday, May 1, Margaritaville Lake Resort is open for business (and fun) in Osage Beach.
There’s been an amazing amount of work going on over the last 18 months during the multi-million dollar transformation of Tan-Tar-A Resort into the new Margaritaville Lake Resort. Those that have stayed at Tan-Tar-A in the past will still recognize the layout of the resort complex, but there are many new and exciting changes and additions on property to look forward to.
The new LandShark Bar & Grill on the property of Margaritaville Lake Resort at the Lake of the Ozarks.
This lakeside escape will transport guests into a vacation state of mind, blending Margaritaville’s authentic “no worries” vibe with the area’s Lake lifestyle. Every guest room and public space has been renovated to match the new island vibe. The resort features multiple diverse restaurant concepts, a full-service spa and salon, a fitness center, horseback riding, bowling, an arcade, three outdoor pool complexes and a 20,000 square-foot indoor water park.
Locals and visitors alike also can partake of the new dining experience at the recently opened LandShark Bar & Grill, located lakeside on the resort grounds. Inspired by the traditional beach bars of the Atlantic Coast, LandShark serves up a complimentary mix of quality food and refreshing beverages which can be enjoyed indoors and out.
The layouts for Margaritaville’s two golf courses, The Oaks and the Nine-Hole Course at Margaritaville, have largely stayed the same but the clubhouse and pro shop at The Oaks has received a major facelift inside and out with new hardwood floors, carpeting and six high-def TVs and a pool table.
For more information on the new Margaritaville Lake Resort, visit www.MargaritavilleLakeResortLakeoftheOzarks.com.

April Golf Trail Tip of the Month: Lake Valley

Rob Wilson, head golf pro at Lake Valley Golf Club in Camdenton, offers this advice for tackling 18 holes at his course:
“When you come to play Lake Valley and look at our scorecard you have a feeling inside saying, ‘I can shoot a really good score today.’
The course has six par 3’s, six par 4’s and six reachable par 5’s. It really lulls you into a false sense of security.
The first thing you think is that the par 5’s are going to be easy to score on. This is true if you are precise with your second shots. If not, there is an easy bogey waiting to jump up and bite you.
The par 4’s require an accurate tee shot to give you the correct angle to attack the greens. If you do not do this there are yet again easy bogies to be made.
Lastly are the par 3’s, which all have a change in elevation. Some play uphill, some play downhill. You must select the right club or you will again miss the green.
The one big tip I can give you to managing your way around the course is to never miss long or left. This is due to the slope in the greens. If your miss is short or a little right, you will have a greater chance of getting up and down and carding a good score.”

April Golf Trail Course of the Month: Lake Valley Golf Club

Set on rolling hills, Lake Valley Golf Club in Camdenton features an unusual balance of six par threes, six par fours and six par fives.

Lake Valley is a “Must Play” course providing a well-maintained, uniquely challenging course.
On-site facilities include a practice putting green, driving range, tennis court, swimming pool, locker room, and bag storage.
The Greenside Bar & Grill serves mouth watering sandwiches and cool refreshments daily.

March Golf Trail Tip of the Month: Osage National

Ryan Manselle, director of golf at Osage National Golf Resort in Lake Ozark, offers this advice for playing the #8 hole on the Mountain Course:

“This scenic par-four hole should begin with a tee shot traveling between 200-220 yards from the middle tees.

That should leave you with a mid- to long-iron approach from the flattest part of the fairway.

Proper club selection is critical to wind up on the nearly 50-yard deep green.  You should subtract approximately 15 yards from your distance to account for the elevation drop to the two-tiered green.

A solid two-putt can lead to a great par on one of the most difficult holes at Osage National.”

March Golf Trail Course of the Month: Osage National Golf Resort

Osage National Golf Resort‘s original 18 holes, designed in 1992 by Arnold Palmer, feature 7,150 yards of zoysia fairways and bentgrass greens.
An additional nine holes (3,559 yards) have been added to create three 18-hole combinations.
The course is laid out on beautifully forested, rolling terrain and surrounded by lakes, creeks and the imposing bluffs of the Osage River. This tranquil setting provides the backdrop for a challenging, enjoyable golf experience.
As the course motto suggests, this truly is “The Must Play Course at the Lake.”  This course has been host to The Michelob Skins game featuring Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Lee Trevino and Payne Stewart.  It also hosted the National Club Pro Championship, many PGA Section events and many charity events.
Osage National features a 20,000 square-foot clubhouse, a fully-stocked pro shop, driving range, two large practice putting greens, and a full-service restaurant.

Golf Trail Tip of the Month: The Oaks at Tan-Tar-A Resort

Paul Leahy, director of golf at Tan-Tar-A Resortoffers this advice for playing the #14 hole onThe Oaks course:
“The par-three 14th hole at The Oaks is one of the prettiest holes on the course and in the area. The backdrop of the hole is one of hundreds of coves on the Lake of the Ozarks.

Water surrounds the hole on two sides and most summer days you will get a great view from the tee of boaters hanging out in the cove enjoying the sunshine.

This hole can play as long as 177 yards and a precise tee shot is needed to keep the ball dry. The green is very narrow back to front and the terrain kicks golf balls toward the Lake on the left.

The bailout area is to the right but this will leave you a very, very delicate difficult pitch to a green that runs away from you.
The easiest pin spot on the hole is back left. Hit the center of the green and watch the ball funnel to this back left hole location. Playing as the second longest Par 3 on the course, this pin location, however, has produced the most holes-in-one on the course.

So, if you find the pin in this location, play for the center of the green and you, too, may have yourself a hole-in-one.

Getting a three on this hole is a great score. And, make sure you get your cameras out while playing this spectacular hole. You won’t want to forget the view.”

Golf Trail Tip of the Month: Indian Rock Golf Club

Chris Jackson, general manager at Indian Rock Golf Club in Gravois Mills, offers this advice on the eighth hole at his club:
“Hole #8 is a 500-yard par five from the tips. On this hole you must be able to control the left-to-right ball movement from the tee shot.

While aiming at the cart path on the left side of the hole, the ball will naturally want to travel right, due to the contour of the fairway.  A well-placed shot should leave you in the 200-yard range.

Now the real trick to reaching the putting green is you MUST carry the ball 200 yards on your second shot. For most people, I tell them to grab one more club and give it a go.  With this shot you have to consider carrying the ball over water and not going out of bounds 20 yards to the right of the green. Accuracy is a must!

If one succeeds in hitting the proper shot, you will be left with a fairly easy attempt for Eagle.”

December Golf Trail Tip of the Month: Bear Creek Valley

Spencer Duncan, general manager and golf pro at Bear Creek Valley Golf Club, offers this advice for golfers who want to score a hole-in-one on the 16th hole at Bear Creek:
“Basically, club down and hit it straight.

The hole, which plays 165 yards from the white tee, drops 100 feet so club down to shorten up 20-25 yards.

Don’t be too short, however, because a creek runs in front of the green.

Trees guard both sides and there’s a fence on the right that is out of bounds, so it is very important to hit straight.”

November Golf Trail Tip of the Month

Drew Geritz, head golf pro at Redfield Golf Club in Eugene offers this helpful tip on how to make sure you’re hitting your shots straight and consistently.

“One of the most important keys to hit consistent, straight shots is hitting the center of the club face.

Impact location is key in hitting the ball the same consistent distance and straighter shots.

A quick and easy way to find out where you are hitting the ball on the face is to purchase a can of Dr. Scholls foot spray.

Before you hit a driver, spray the club face.

When you hit the ball it will show you exactly where you hit it.

From there you can make adjustments to find out how to hit the center of the face more often and more consistently.

This is a cheap way to find out. A can costs about $4 and lasts a long time. It also wipes off the club face extremely clean and leaves no residue.”

October Golf Trail Tip of the Month: The Golf Club at Deer Chase

Spencer Wilson (pictured right), general manager and head golf pro at The Golf Club at Deer Chase, provides this tip for playing the 17th hole, one of the most challenging on his course:

“The 17th hole at Deer Chase is a 440-yard Par 4 that requires precision with every shot, all the way from the tee to the green.
Standing on the tee box, you’re faced with an out-of-bounds no more than five yards right of the ideal landing area for your tee shot.
To make things even more difficult, the fairway slopes severely from right to left, forcing golfers to cut the ball towards the aforementioned out-of-bounds stakes to hold to the fairway.
If you’re lucky enough to find the short grass, you now face an uphill approach shot to a two-tiered green, but like the approach shot, missing left is not an option.
If you fail to get the ball on the proper tier, three putting is a real possibility. Walking away with a four on this hole will feel like a birdie. But, if you’re accurate, or lucky, you can make par and feel proud that you conquered this tough hole.”
